Reports from Kano State in northwestern Nigeria say something has exploded on Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano.
Sabon Gari Market President Nafi'u Nuhu Indabo confirmed the incident to the BBC, saying it had affected many people, including school children.
BBC went to the scene, the Winner Kids Academy where the bomb was allegedly planted.
"The roof of the school was torn down by the force of the bomb. All the roads around it were crowded with people who were worried and worried," Dokaji said.
Kano State Commissioner of Police CP Sama'ila Dikko and the state DSS chairman were already present, and ambulances arrived to evacuate the victims.
CP Dikko told the BBC that the gas tank there had exploded, "but it was not a bomb as claimed," the commissioner said.
He added that four bodies had been recovered and investigations were ongoing. But Khalifa Dokaji said blood could be seen everywhere and in other parts of the body.
Security forces have been trying to contain the angry mob, which has allowed an investigation into the incident.
