Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has unveiled a plan to provide subsidized petrol for farmers in Damasak, aiming to boost food security among residents recovering from over a decade-long insurgency. This initiative aligns with President Tinubu's agricultural agenda, focusing on achieving food sufficiency in areas impacted by the insurgency.
Governor Zulum shared the plan on Tuesday after overseeing the distribution of palliatives to vulnerable women and widows. He emphasized his commitment to improving the living conditions of those returning from Niger Republic due to the ongoing conflict.
To support sustainable livelihoods, Zulum announced deliberate steps to enhance agricultural productivity and alleviate economic burdens on Damasak's farmers. The primary focus is on addressing the energy needs of farmers who rely on generators powered by fossil fuels. Zulum plans to identify two fueling stations and supply petrol (PMS) at subsidized rates, reducing the cost for farmers and making irrigation more affordable.
In addition to subsidizing petrol, the governor pledged to distribute solar water-pumping generating sets, seedlings, fertilizer, and other agricultural inputs. He also outlined plans to procure solar water pumps and install drip irrigation and sprinkler facilities in Damasak.
Damasak, situated in northern Borno, serves as a vital agricultural hub and a pilot site for Borno's agricultural rejuvenation. Once a stronghold of insurgents, it was liberated by Nigerian security forces, enabling the Zulum-led administration to reconstruct, resettle residents, and cultivate vast farmlands.
