Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, exhibited his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) by distributing 447 resettlement houses and essential items on Sunday in Dalori community, Konduga Local Government Council.
The houses, constructed by the Borno State Government, aim to provide a secure and stable environment for families displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. The newly resettled community now boasts a hospital, school, and water facilities to support the residents' well-being.
The beneficiaries of the resettlement initiative were drawn from two locations: 197 households from Kawar Maila camp and 250 families from Dalori town. Each of the 447 households, comprising approximately 2,500 family members, received food items, mats, blankets, and clothing materials.
Governor Zulum, speaking during the distribution, emphasized that the Borno State Government has taken crucial steps to offer humanitarian support to the returnees, enabling them to rebuild their lives.
He further pledged the provision of agricultural kits and entrepreneurship support to ensure the returnees have sustainable livelihood sources.
Under the leadership of Governor Zulum since 2019, the administration has successfully resettled over one million IDPs and constructed more than 10,000 resettlement houses across 20 locations.
Governor Zulum also outlined plans for the reconstruction and resettlement of Dalwa and Sandiya communities, among other locations, which were displaced and damaged by Boko Haram insurgents in Konduga Local Government Area.
In a parallel move, Governor Zulum announced the commencement of the closure of all informal IDP camps in Maiduguri, the state capital, on Sunday.
Highlighting the need for individuals to contribute to the development of their communities, Zulum expressed that it is no longer sustainable to keep people in IDP camps.
He stated, “Therefore, we will return them to their ancestral homes so that they can start fending for themselves.” Governor Zulum affirmed the closure of all informal IDP camps in Maiduguri before May 29, 2024, reinforcing the administration's commitment to comprehensive resettlement and community development.
