In a fervent appeal, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged all levels of the Nigerian government to promptly address the diverse challenges faced by women and girls across the country.
On the occasion of the 2024 International Women's Day, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the Executive Director of CISLAC, brought attention to the prevalent issue of insecurity affecting women and girls.
He emphasized the persistent threats of violence, kidnappings, and banditry, citing a recent incident where over 100 females were kidnapped in Borno State.
Comrade Rafsanjani stressed the crucial necessity for comprehensive gender policies at every level of government. He particularly highlighted the significant role of the National Assembly in hastening the passage of essential Gender Bills. These bills are envisioned to safeguard the rights and well-being of women and girls throughout the nation.
In response to the escalating cases of domestic violence, rape, and sexual harassment within tertiary institutions, Comrade Rafsanjani called upon the National Human Rights Commission and other stakeholders to take decisive measures. He urged them to protect survivors and ensure swift justice for the perpetrators involved.
CISLAC's advocacy efforts also extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging his prompt assent to the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institutions Bill.
This legislation is deemed vital in combating the pervasive culture of harassment and abuse within academic settings, aiming to establish a safer environment for learning and development.
As CISLAC amplifies its voice in championing gender equality and justice, the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to drive tangible change.
